Caribbean Storm May Not Even Warrant A Unique Name
(June 28) The U.S. National Hurricane Center has been closely monitoring a storm that is headed for the Gulf of Mexico and expects that there is a low chance of its development into a tropical storm. On Friday, the system was classified as a “tropical wave,” leaving large areas of showers and thunderstorms from Cuba and the Cayman Islands through to the coast of Honduras.
By Sunday afternoon, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reports, “This system is becoming less organized and development is not expected as it drifts northwestward over the next day or two. There is a low chance, less than 30 percent, of this system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.”
If the system had sustained winds of 39 mph, it would be given the name, Tropical Storm Ana, the first named storm of the 2009 Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season.
